Artificial Intelligence “AI-Art” Policy at AniFest

Hello, thank you for taking the time for reading this important section regarding our Ai-Art policy. No, we have not used ChatGPT or Grok to type this up. It is 100% human written by me (Chair of AniFest). So in the past (and also probably today), this topic has been extremely controversial and decisive in the community. Unfortunately we have been caught in the middle in a tough and uncertain position. Therefore, I will try my best to express what our viewpoints are and to find a middle ground and compromise. Because that is typically the approach we like to use for every difficult situation.

For Artists and Vendors: We know that you cherish the work that is created. Our staff and including myself are traditional artists who enjoy the work we do. We work very hard and some can view Ai-Art as a threat to their work and their livelihood.

For futurists, technologists, and pro Ai-Art enthusiasts: We also understand that there are exciting tools, features, and software that utilize Ai-Art, and it is like any other tool that is available for the general public. And much like the analog to digital era, new technologies should not be feared, but to be viewed as a tool to enhance your store and merchandise.

Long story short, our compromise is the following:

  • If you choose to use Ai-Art, please disclose that you do in a conspicuous manner with a large sign that is affixed to your booth. An honest disclaimer letting attendees know that you either use Ai-Art or Ai-Assisted-Art in your designs is the best approach. No one is going to call you out for doing so.
  • If you are a 100% handcrafted artist, it is also prudent for you to disclose that also. Many attendees would love to support your work since it has a pure handcrafted element to it.
  • Please do not lie about your artwork. We do not gatekeep people who are honest.

The reasoning behind this policy is simple: We have commissioned artwork in the past that was criticized to be Ai-Art, with some saying it isn’t and others saying it is. The fact is, that we do not have evidence or know with absolute certainty. Despite this, we have been publicly called out through no fault of our own, and we don’t want the same situation for anyone who attends our event.

So please be considerate of those who purchases your products and let others know how or what tools were used for your art pieces. We won’t judge or assume anything is Ai-Art or not, as we are not experts in this subject. And in the same light, if you think that someone is using Ai-Art and hasn’t disclosed it, please do not jump to conclusions because it can ruin their lives.

I hope this clears things up, and we thank you again for supporting our beloved Anime Festival.
